According to the book ISM Book (ISBN: 978-0-470-29421-5) Page-314, section 14.2.2 – Storage Array-Based Remote Replication:

Array-based synchronous remote replication
1. Write from the source host is received by the source storage array
2. Write is then transmitted to the remote storage array
3. Acknowledgment is sent to the source storage array by the remote storage array
4. Source storage array signals write-completion to the source host

Array-based asynchronous remote replication:
1. Source host writes to the source storage array
2. Source array immediately acknowledges the source host
3. These writes are then transmitted to the target array
4. After the writes are received by the target array, it sends an acknowledge to source array

I think the answer should be as follow:
1. The write I/O is received from production compute system into cache of source and placed in queue
2. The write I/O is transmitted to the cache of the target storage
3. Receipt acknowledgment is provided by target storage back to cache of the source
4. Source storage system sends an acknowledgment back to the production compute system
